A Dual-Stack Coaxial Magnetic Gear for a Wave Energy Conversion Generator

This article presents the electromagnetic and mechanical design analyses of a 7.67:1 gear ratio magnetic (MG) for wave energy converter demonstrator. A 2-D 3-D magnetostatic finite-element analysis (FEA) was conducted to maximize mass torque density. To increase without increasing diameter, unique dual-stack rotor topology used along with 12-segment per pole-pair inner Halbach array four-segment outer topology. The eddy current loss within MG mitigated by using laminated magnets low-loss electrical steel. experimentally tested had peak 1796.8 $\text{N}\cdot \text{m}$ , which corresponds an active region volumetric density 221.1 /L 105.74 /kg, respectively. efficiency at rated speed maximum measured be 95%. new in-plane mechanism identified as being primary reason losses higher than initially calculated one.
